Tribute to the 617 Sqn Dambusters Crew of Lancaster AJ-G by David Pentland. The image shows Lancaster AJ-G attacking the Mohne dam. Alongside is the portrait of AJ-G pilot Wing Cdr G P Gibson. The Second Wave, Greece, 20th May 1941 by David Pentland. Following the initial parachute drops at Maleme (West) and Canea (Middle) Group East, comprising of Fallschirmjager Regiment 1 and 2nd battalion FJR2, prepared for their descent on Crete. Charged with the capture of Heraklion and its aerodrome, their departure was postponed until late afternoon due to the repairs and refuelling needed for the returning Junker 52 transports. |
Pathfinder Force by Philip West. Passing low over Norwich Cathedral on this wintry evening, Pathfinder Mosquitoes begin to transit east from their bases on yet another dangerous night-time mission over enemy territory. They will take the lead on this bombing mission and their role is to identify and mark pre-planned targets with flares, enabling the main force of Lancaster and Halifax aircraft to drop their bombs as accurately as possible. The Pathfinders were elite squadrons in RAF Bomber Command. Like all aircrew, these brave men took the fight to the enemy night after night until victory was achieved. |
Mediterranean Fury - Tribute to No.248 Sqn by Ivan Berryman. Providing vital support to the Pedestal convoy in 1942, No.248 Sqn were in action from their base on the island of Malta when, on 21st August, Sgt Ron Hammond destroyed a probable two aircraft in a single sortie. Flying Bristol Beaufighter T4843 (WR-X), he first dispatched a Ju88 and then found himself on the tail of a Fiat BR.20. Approaching on the enemy's right quarter, Hammond shot up the BR.20's starboard engine, the raking fire ripping through the wing and along the fuselage, eventually tearing off the port tailfin, which spun away, perilously close to his own aircraft. The Fiat was seen to spin out of control, plunging into the sea below. |

Attack on the Sorpe by Ivan Berryman. Of the five Lancasters that formed the Second Wave of Operation Chastise, just one aircraft made it to the target, the Sorpe Dam, on the night of 16th/17th May 1943. American pilot Joe McCarthy had been forced to switch to the reserve aircraft due to technical difficulties and subsequently took off slightly later than his less fortunate comrades, all of whom fell either to German flak or to mishaps on their perilous journey. Upon arrival, McCarthy found the view of the dam itself to be unobscured, although mist in the surrounding valleys made it difficult to gauge his approach. As this was not a masonry dam, a different tactic was employed to the Möhne and Eder which involved flying along the length of the dam and dropping the Upkeep bomb, unspun, directly onto it. Their task was made all the more difficult by the fact that their approach necessitated McCarthy bringing AJ-T low over the hilltop village of Langsheid whose Church spire occupied the very point at which the aircraft had to pass to get a good run upon the dam. Undaunted and with great skill, ED825(G) made its run and released the bomb onto the dam, unassisted by the spotlight altimeter device that had proved so useful at the Möhne and Eder as AJ-T had not been fitted with this aid. Nevertheless, the Upkeep struck the dam and exploded as planned, sadly with little effect. McCarthy and his brave crew returned safely to Scampton, their landing made slightly difficult by a tyre that had been damaged by light flak on the return journey. The Sorpe was attacked again in the small hours of the morning when Flight Sergeant Ken Brown's aircraft, AJ-F of the Third Wave arrived, once more striking the dam successfully, but again without breaching it. |

Depart in Peace by Geoff Lea. On 15th September 1965, the late Jeffrey Quill flew the old Spitfire VB AB910 into RAF Station Coltishall to be handed over to the Royal Air Force Memorial Flight and preserved in perpetuity. Significantly, this was to be virtually the final moment of a thirty-year association and devotion by Jeffrey Quill to his beloved Spitfire. After Mutt Summers initial flight, it was largely left to Jeffrey to help turn Reginald Mitchells inspired design into the most famous fighter aircraft of all time. Jeffrey Quill writes in his book, Spitfire, A Test Pilots Story : It had been my business to criticise it and identify its faults; I had no illusions about it and knew its problems only too well. Indeed, they had caused me sleepless nights all too often... As I climbed out of the cockpit of AB910 I had that feeling of sadness, of bidding farewell to an old an trusted friend. The title of the print comes most appropriately from the words of Nunc Dimittis, - Lord now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, as AB910 goes into the loving care of the Memorial Flight. AB910 had a long, historic career since being built in 1942 at Castle Bromwich. It was delivered to 92 Squadron whose letters QJ-J it bore at the time of presentation. Ninety-two Squadron flew Spitfires throughout the entire war and was also one of the Royal Air Forces top-scoring squadrons. AB910 was also the aircraft on which a ground crew WAAF, now Miss Horton, made an unscheduled flight crouched across the tail. After the war, it was bought by the late Air Cmdre A. H. Wheeler, CBE, and later by Vickers-Armstrong Aircraft limited, who completely restored it. This work was carried out almost as a solo job by Arthur Luscombe at Chilbolton and later the aircraft was based at South Marston. As shown in this painting, AB910 was fitted with a Merlin 55M engine from a Seafire III to improve low-level performance, and a four-bladed propeller, untypical of a Spitfire V, both of which have now been changed by the Memorial Flight. After a life of more than forty years, AB910 continues to give pleasure to thousands as it participates in displays during the summer months. AB910 serves as a permanent reminder of those days of the 1940s when the flashing, eliptical wings skimmed high and proudly to bring freedom to the skies. Now, as then, to be a Spitfire pilot is the dream of small boys of all ages. Indeed, even as one sees and hears this remarkable machine, inevitably its magic draws us all into its heart to become part of a legend. |

Dzubeks Deblinskis by Ronald Wong. On January 21st 1941, former personell of the Polish Air Forces C.W.L. Deblin Training Centre were formed into No.315 Deblinski (City of Deblin) Fighter Squadron at Acklington, England. This was the sixth Polish squadron formed in the RAF from expatriate airmen to continue the fight against Nazi Germany. In July 1944, the squadron, flying hte Mustang Mk.III became part of the Air Defence of Gerat Britain where its primary role became Diver Patrols against V-1 flying bombs from the continent, although it continued to fly armed reconnaissance, escort and other missions over occupied Europe. At this time the unit was led by the legendary Squadron Leader Eugeniusz Horbaczewski, nicknamed Dubek, who was to achieve 16.5 victoriesin the air, with 5.5 of these in the Mustang, plus 4 V-1s downed. The stories of his courage were many, the most notable being the occasion when he landed his Mustang on an uncompleted Normandy landing strip and flew one of his downed pilots home on his lap. The outstanding air battle for 315 Squadron occurred on August 18th 1944, when it engaged over 60 Luftwaffe fighters near Beauvais and destroyed 16 Me109s and Fw190s for the loss of one of their own, which sadly was that of Dzubek himself. |

Spitfires Over Malta - Flt Lt Ken Evans DFC by Ivan Berryman. Fl. Lt. Ken Evans DFC is depicted flying Spitfire Mk Vc BR471 over Grand Harbour, Malta, during his posting to 126 Sqn in 1942 where he was credited with 5 enemy aircraft destroyed, 3 damaged and a further 3 probables. He was awarded the DFC in December 1942. |
Malta Relief by Tim Fisher. Hawker Hurricanes of 249 squadron (RAF) departing off HMS Ark Royal in June 1941 as par tof Force H. The Hurricanes were to become part of the Defence of Malta against the onslought and non stop bombing by the Axis Bombers and HMS Ark Royal would be sunk only a few months later when on the 13th November 1941 HMS Ark Royal was hit by a single torpedo from the German U-boat U81. The torpedo hit on the starboard side near the starboard boiler room causing a 130ft by 30ft hole. Water poured in causing a 10% list immediately. The flooding spread quickly to the middle of the ship and then to the port boiler room, eectric power failed, and after 14 hours while in tow to Gibraltar she capsized and sunk the following day. |
Attack on the Scharnhorst by Ivan Berryman. Swordfish of 825 Sqn led by Lt-Cdr Esmonde begin their heroic attack on the battlescruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen as they make their way up the English Channel from Brest during Operation Cerberus on 12th February 1942. Although all the aircraft were lost and no significant damage was done to the German fleet, all the pilots were decorated for their bravery and Lt-Cdr Esmonde received the first Fleet Air Arm VC to be awarded, albeit posthumously. The painting depicts the first wave of Swordfish attacking the Scharnhorst with Gneisenau taking avoiding action in the distance. A German torpedo boat has turned to confront the attacking aircraft. |

Attacking in a Kette of three aircraft from behind and below targeting the tailenders and rising over the B-17s. Avoiding any debris and evading the incoming fighter escort, who are dropping down from their top cover positions. Rudolf Sinner acheived a total of 39 victories, including two in the Me262. |
