The One That Broke The Dam by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Amid a hail of defensive fire, Flt Lt D J H Maltby holds Lancaster ED906/G AJ-J steady for his bomb aimer John Fort to perfectly choose his moment to release the Upkeep Bomb that would ultimately breach and destroy the Mohne Dam during the famous Dambuster raids on the Ruhr on the night of 16th / 17th May 1943. |
Doolittle Raider, Tokyo, April 18th 1942 by David Pentland. (PC) Aircraft number 2247, flown by Lt McElroy, attacks the Yokosuka Yard near Tokyo. He was one of the 18 B25 Mitchell bombers which took part in the famous retaliatory raid on Japan. |
In Them We Trust by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Two Spitfire Mk1Bs of 92 Squadron patrol the south coast from their temporary base at Ford, here passing over the Needles rocks, Isle of Wight, in the Spring of 1942. |
Hannes Trautloft by Graeme Lothian. (PC) Hannes Truatloft is shown here leading Fw190s of JG54 over the Russian Front. Hannes Trautloft is one of the Luftwaffes great fighter leaders, scoring his first air victory in the Spanish Civil War in August 1936. Returning to Germany in 1937 he joined the national aerobatics team flying the Me109. Soon after the outbreak of World War II, Hannes took command of I./JG20 taking part in the Battle of Britain, before moving to the Balkans as Kommodore of JG54. Now leading the group on the Russian Front, JG54 took part in the heavy fighting, first in the Me109, then the Fw190. In the summer of 1943 Hannes Trautloft joined General Gallands staff. As a mutineer he was sacked by Goering, thus ending an illustrious combat career comprising 550 combat missions and 57 aerial victories. |

3 Squadron Hurricanes by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Hurricanes of No.3 Squadron on patrol. MkIIc variants, characterised by the four Hispano or Oerlikon cannon housed in the wings. No 3 Sqn were engaged in night fighter activities during the Spring of 1941. |
Tribute to Edgar 'Cobber' Kain by Ivan Berryman. (PC) No one will ever know how great a fighter pilot New Zealander Cobber Kain might have been, but in his short wartime service, he was credited with 14 confirmed victories and was the RAF's first flying ace. By mid 1940, he was suffering with fatigue and was sent on leave but, as a farewell gesture to his squadron comrades, he performed a short aerial display which resulted in a fatal crash. He is depicted in his 73 Sqn Hawker Hurricane Mk 1. |

Night Reaper, 4th May 1942 by David Pentland. (PC) Hawker Hurricane IIc of top Czech ace Flt. Lt. K.M. Kuttlewascher, No.1 Fighter Squadron on a night intruder sortie from RAF Tangmere. On this mission he destroyed three Heinkel IIIs over their own airfield, St. Andre, in occupied France. |
Tribute to Pilot Officer Ted Shipman by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Flying as Leader of B Flight, 41 Sqn, on 15th August 1940, Pilot Officer Ted Shipman and the rest of his flight found themselves among a mass of Messerschmitt Bf.110s that had been detailed to escort a bomber force of Heinkel He111s on a raid on the North of England. Having made one head-on attack on one of the Bf.110s, Shipman manoeuvred his Spitfire Mk.1 onto the tail of another and fired a long burst into it. This was M8+CH of Oberleutnant Hans-Ulrich Kettling of 1./ZG76 and rear Gunner / Radio Operator O/ Gefr Volk, whose starboard engine burst into flames and disappeared into the dense cloudbase. Shipman claimed this initially as a probable, but it was later confirmed as a victory when the aircraft was found to have crash landed at Streatham Nr Barnard Castle. Spitfire K9805 (EB-L) is depicted breaking off the attack as Kettling's stricken Bf.110 begins to burn. Ted Shipman would go on to serve with the Royal Air Force until December 1959 retiring as a Wing Commander. Ted would also go onto become friends with Hans-Ulrich Kettling, the pilot he shot down. |
Biggin Trio by Ivan Berryman. (PC) A trio of Spitfire Mk1s of 603 Sqn based at Biggin Hill are depicted on patrol in the Summer skies above Kent during the height of the Battle of Britain in August 1940. Lead aircraft is N3288 XT-H flown by Plt Off George Gilroy who finished the war with 14 confirmed victories, 10 shared and a further 14 aircraft destroyed in actions in which he was directly involved. |
High Pursuit by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Squadron Leader H C Sawyer is depicted here flying his 65 Sqn Spitfire Mk.1a R6799 (YT-D) in the skies above Kent on 31st July 1940 at the height of the Battle of Britain. Chasing him is Major Hans Trubenbach of 1 Gruppe, Lehrgeschwader 2 in his Messerschmitt Vf109E-3 (Red 12) . The encounter lasted eight minutes with both pilots surviving. |
Down, But Not Out by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Spitfire Mk IIa P7350 is an aircraft with an astonishing history. Scrambled on 25th October 1940 from Hornchurch, Pilot Officer Ludwik Martel climbed his aircraft through thick cloud and was immediately attacked by a number of Messerschmitt Bf.109s. Two other Spitfires were shot down and Martel's aircraft was raked with machine gun and cannon fire, the latter punching a large hole in the port wing Severely injured, but still in control, Martel descended through 16,000ft to make a wheels-up landing in a field near Hastings. The aircraft was recovered and repaired and left 603 Sqn for duties elsewhere, but P7350 was damaged in at least a further three incidents before being finally made surplus in 1947. Sold for scrap for just £25, The aircraft again survived and was brought back to flying condition for the film The Battle of Britain. And she is still flying today, eighty years on, with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. |

Looking for Business by Ivan Berryman. (PC) A pair of Focke Wulf 190A4s of 9./JG2 Richthofen based at Vannes, France during February 1943. The nearest aircraft is that of Staffelkapitan Siegfried Schnell. The badge on the nose is the rooster emblem of III./JG2 and the decoration on Schnells rudder shows 70 of his eventual total of 93 kills. |
Tribute to Pete Brothers by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Pete Brothers is shown here in his Hurricane P2921 GZ-L of No.32 Squadron during the Battle of Britain. In one of 8 victories claimed before September 1940, he has peppered a marauding German Dornier Do.215, its port engine now trailing smoke and flame. In this incident, he had been attacked by Me110s and had stalled while turning to meet them. Spinning out of the stall he immediately sighted, engaged and shot down the Do.215. He claimed an Me109 later the same day. Pete Brothers is credited with a total of 16 victories during World War Two. He died aged 91 in December 2008. |
Night of Defiance by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Boulton Paul Defiant of 151 Sqn, based at Wittering, attacking a Messerschmitt Me110. Following an exhausting summer during the Battle of Britain, 151 was designated a night fighter squadron and was equipped both with Hurricanes and Defiants. On the night of 15th January 1942, two Defiants succeeded in bringing down three German aircraft and further successes were recorded during enemy raids on Birmingham when a further nine kills were claimed. |
Foob Fairbanks - The Terror of the Rhine by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Flying his last mission with his old mount, Hawker Tempest EJ762, fresh from repair after being damaged by flak, David Fairbanks found himself embroiled in a fierce battle with Messerschmitt Bf109s on 17th December 1944. In the course of the combat, Fairbanks shot down two of the enemy aircraft and damaged another before returning safely. |
The Fledgling by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Under the watchful eye of his more experienced tutor a trainee pilot gets his first taste of the Spitfire Mk.IIa, airborne from Tangmere early in 1941. The nearest aircraft is P7856 (YT-C) which enjoyed a long career, surviving until 1945. |
Tribute to Major Erich Rudorffer by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG 54 Erich Rudorffer is depicted in Fw190A-6 'Black Double Chevron' over the misty forests of Finland in June 1944. Credited with 222 aerial victories, he survived being shot down no less than sixteen times and survived the war until eventually passing away in 2016 aged 98. |
